Overview of content/topic level of unit plan:

  • Reading - 8th Grade
  • My Brother Sam is Dead
  • This is an integrated reading and civics unit that explores the Revolutionary War through a historical fiction. During civics class the students will learn about the war and during reading class the content will be supported through the novel. As students read the novel they will make connections to the world they live in and the world of the characters. Students will be exposed to the consequences of war, both good and bad. As the students answer reflective questions through daily blogging they will respond to essential questions, other student questions, and create questions of their own. They will use Visual Ranking Element to help them reflect upon their own beliefs with supporting text. In collaborative groups the students will need to defend their responses to peers. Students will also use Seeing Reason Element based on the Revolutionary War. As the students group read My Brother Sam Is Dead they will list factors that the Revolutionary War had on characters, economics, geography, and, society. Students will also have daily vocabulary that they will be exposed to through the interactive whiteboard. Students will choose a final project from a list of potential projects or create a project of their own with teacher approval.
